Summer is a long-awaited season, but the heat can make some apartments uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are clever ways to keep your living space cool and pleasant, without running up your electricity meter. Here are a few Tips to help you cool down your apartment and make the most of summer without suffering too much from the heat.

Create draughts

If you have several windows in your apartment, open them strategically to circulate the air. This will let warm air out and fresh air in. To create a draught, open 2 opposite windows.

If you can't ventilate, a fan is a good way to create a breeze in your apartment. Place them strategically near the windows to circulate the air and create a cool sensation. You can also use a ceiling fan for optimum ventilation. As an added bonus, you can freeze bottles of water and place them in front of your fan!

In extreme heat, if you need to cool your apartment quickly, invest in a portable air conditioner. You'll be able to move it quickly around the different rooms in your student accommodation. However, energy consumption is much higher.

Block outside heat by creating shaded areas

During the hottest hours of the day, close your curtains and shutters to block the sun's rays, which are responsible for heating up your accommodation. If possible, install an awning outside your windows to reduce direct exposure to the sun. This will keep your apartment cooler and save energy.

Opt for LED lighting

Traditional light bulbs give off heat, which can contribute to raising the temperature in your apartment. Replace them with LED bulbs, which consume less energy and generate less heat: a useful gesture for your comfort, but also eco-responsible!

Freshen the air with plants

Some plants have natural cooling properties. Place plants like aloe vera in your apartment to improve air quality and reduce the heat.

Take cool showers

A refreshing shower is a great way to relax and reduce your body temperature. Take the opportunity to refresh yourself, especially before going to bed.

Use light sheets and clothing

Opt for light cotton sheets and loose-fitting clothes made from breathable fabrics to help you withstand the heat better at night.

By following these tips, you'll be able to cool down your apartment and save yourself from the sweltering summer climate.

Avoid cooking hot dishes and turning on your oven or hob, which tend to heat up the apartment. Instead, opt for fresh salads.
