Moving house is a major step in student life. Whether you're moving to a new city, a new neighborhood or just a new place to live, it requires a great deal of organization and preparation. In this article, we give you some TIPS to make your move easier, from preparing to leave to settling into your new home! Departure notice: anticipate to avoid complications.

Before you start packing, make sure you respect the notice period for leaving your current home. This period may vary depending on the rental contract. For furnished accommodation in FAC-HABITAT student residences, the notice period is 1 month.

You must send a registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt, and the notice period starts as soon as you receive the letter. To make your life easier, you can find a sample letter in your name directly in your personal "web-app" space. All you have to do is print it out and send it to the address indicated.
In FAC-HABITAT student residences, as soon as your notice of departure has been received and registered, the maintenance manager will contact you to make 2 appointments:

  • The first appointment is an "advisory visit" to check on any repairs that need to be made to your student accommodation. The aim is to avoid any invoices on leaving. Carry out any minor repairs required (fill in holes in the walls, repaint if necessary, replace faulty light bulbs, etc.).
  • The second appointment is the inventory of fixtures and fittings at the end of the move, when you hand over the keys.

The move has to take place before the inventory of fixtures, so you need to be really organized to avoid last-minute stress. Sort through your belongings, donate, sell or throw away what you no longer need. You can plan ahead to book a removal van or ask friends and family for help. As you pack, think about the organization of your new home. Pack similar items together, or group them by room (e.g. kitchen, bathroom, bedroom...). Remember to label boxes according to their contents, which will save time when moving into your new student apartment.

Take a final look around to make sure everything's in order before handing over the keys - and don't forget anything!
