Choosing home insurance (or MRH, Multirisques Habitation) is an essential step for any student moving into a new home. It's often seen as a tedious formality, but it's crucial for peace of mind. Here's everything you need to know about student housing insurance!

Why is home insurance important?

When you rent a student apartment, you become responsible for any damage that may occur in the accommodation. Home insurance protects you against the unexpected, such as water damage, fire or burglary. Without this coverage, the cost of repairing or replacing your personal property could quickly become substantial. Home insurance is often required by landlords before you can hand over the keys to your accommodation.

Is student home insurance compulsory?

Yes, home insurance is compulsory for student tenants. The law requires that you take out insurance covering at least the risks associated with renting. If you don't take out this insurance, the landlord can cancel the rental contract or take out insurance on your behalf, at your own expense.

Student accommodation insurance: essential coverages

Home insurance for student accommodation includes a number of guarantees. Here are the main ones.

Civil liability: This covers property damage or bodily injury you may cause to others. For example, if you accidentally spill an object on a neighbor, or if a fire breaks out in your apartment and damages other accommodation, your civil liability will cover repairs. At FAC-HABITAT, liability insurance is included in your SMERRA home insurance policy.

Rental risk guarantee: This is compulsory for all tenants. It covers damage to the rented property caused by incidents such as fire or water damage.

Electrical damage guarantee: In the event of a power surge or short-circuit, this guarantee covers the repair or replacement of your damaged electrical appliances.

At FAC-HABITAT, you can take out your SMERRA home insurance directly online when you reserve your home. The insurance will then be paid monthly and automatically deducted at the same time as your rent!
