When you're a student moving into your first apartment, decorating can seem like a luxury that's hard to afford.
However, with a little creativity and ingenuity, it's entirely possible to make your new living space your own, and turn it into a warm and welcoming place, without spending a fortune.
Flea markets and second-hand goods!
Brocantes and flea markets are goldmines for inexpensive decorative objects. You can find retro furniture, original knick-knacks, picture frames or mirrors and much more that will add character to your student accommodation! And don't forget that you can negotiate the price yourself.
Recycle and DIY
DIY is a great way to save money while adding your own personal touch to your student apartment. Turn old crates into shelves, restore damaged furniture with a little paint, create wall decorations with photos and posters. Practicing DIY (Do It Yourself) not only saves you money, but also helps you develop your artistic side.
Green up your interior with plants
In addition to their refreshing properties, plants add a soothing ambience to any space. Opt for easy-care houseplants such as cacti. You can also buy aromatic herbs such as basil or chives, which you can even use for cooking!
Create your own cocoon with string lights, cushions or rugs
LED string lights are an economical way of creating a warm, cocooning atmosphere in your student apartment. You can hang them on walls, around shelves or on your bed.
Cushions, rugs and curtains are decorative elements that can totally change the spirit of a room.
Use frames or wall stickers
Frame inspirational photos, illustrations or magazine pages. Arrange them on the wall to create a creative decorating space that reflects your personality.
Check donation and salvage sites for bargains
Many people donate furniture and decorative items they no longer need. You can browse these sites online to find your decorative items for free or at very low prices.
Note: In many of our FAC-HABITAT residences, you'll find barter or anti-garbage areas. Neighbors can swap items they're not using for other decorations! You can also drop off items you'd like to part with.
