The start of a new academic year is often synonymous with new beginnings, and settling into new student accommodation can be as exciting as it is stressful. To help you get off to a good start and get ready for the new academic year, here's some practical advice on settling in.

Prepare in advance

Getting settled in starts with careful preparation. Before moving in, it's crucial to gather all the necessary administrative documents, such as the rental contract, inventory of fixtures, and home insurance. At FAC-HABITAT, these documents are made available to you on your tenant space, so you can access them easily and self-serve! You should also draw up a list of the essentials you'll need in the first few days, such as crockery, bed linen and cleaning products.

Lay out your space in a functional way

Your student accommodation is probably smaller than your family home, which makes optimizing space a little more important. Opt for multifunctional furniture, such as a bed with built-in storage or a folding table that can double as a desk and dining table. Use vertical storage solutions, such as wall-mounted shelves and storage boxes, to maximize available space. As a reminder, most FAC-HABITAT apartments are furnished and/or equipped, so you can settle into your student accommodation with complete peace of mind. Don't forget to personalize your space so that you feel at ease; your comfort in your apartment is essential for effective study. You can, for example, add photos, posters, lamps or plants to create a warm, study-friendly atmosphere.

Adapt to your new environment

Once you've settled in, it's important to familiarize yourself with your new neighborhood. Find out about local shops, such as supermarkets, pharmacies and bakeries, so you know where to get what you need. Find out about nearby bus, metro or streetcar routes to make getting around easier, as well as how to get to your place of study or the university library, for example. Get involved in student life by joining associations or clubs, which are a great way to meet new people and build your university network. Participate in the events organized by your university or residence to build relationships and integrate quickly. FAC-HABITAT student residences regularly organize small events such as welcome parties, end-of-year meals and Halloween parties!
